Clinical Evaluation of Colostomy



Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 141 cases of colostomy, which were done at the Depa-rtment of Surgery of Chonnam National University Hospital from January 1976 to December 1983.
The results were as follows.
1) The ratio between male to female was 1.71: 1 and age incidence was most prevalent in 5th decades, comprising 20.6% of cases.
2) The most prevalent type of colostomy were T-loop colostomy (30.5%), S-loop colostomy (27.6%), S-end colostomy (29. 8%).
3) Diseases for colostomy were in the order of decreasing frequency; colorectal cancer (53.2%), colorectal perforation (12.8%), congenital megacolon(7.8%), imperforated anus (6. 4%).
4) The complication of colostomy was 20.6%(29 cases); skin erosion in 13 cases, prolapsed in 7 cases, stenosis in 3 cases, paracolostomy hernia, bleeding, necrosis in 2 cases respec-tively. Revision of done in 9 of 29 cases.
5) The mean hospitalstay was 19 days in S-loop colostomy, 24 days in S-end colostomy, 31 days in T-loop colostomy, 69 days in T-end colostomy.
6) The mean interval for repair was 120 days in T-loop colostomy, 126 days in T-end
colostomy, 150 days in S-loop colostomy, 225 days in S-endcalostomy, 226 days in T-divided colostomy.
7) All mortality was 5.0%(7 cases) and the frequent cause of death was sepsis (4 cases).
